Nope, but lots of other things mentioned in the post have conspired together to pretty much dead-end what I was doing. I have to get a handle on it all and get back to what I was doing right again.

I'm shifting some things around a bit, but not completely successful with that yet. Kind of distracted and need to get things prioritized much better.

According to my friend, the librarian, The Purple Runner was bound using a technique called (euphemistically, in my opinion) "perfect binding," so I guess it's predisposed to eventually falling apart. I mean, it's not like publishers can know which titles will become enduring cult favorites and bind them to last longer, huh?

Yeah, she had to do a number on my copy. She carefully removed the transparent tape and replaced it with special tape that's supposed to be kinder to the paper, then she wrapped the whole thing in a cover of the same type of adhesive material. It's not perfect, but it should hold up.

I can tell you that as an original owner of a copy of TPR...it does have a tendency to fall apart! :-) I do take pretty good care of my books, but the glue holding the cover to the spine dried up totally and several leaves got loose.

I admit to resorting to clear packing tape to reinforce it. But it still reads like a charm!

Well, the Cowtown will be run after your birthday, so we'll both be in the same age group -- you literally got cheated out of your final year in the 45-49 age group, but you may see a bonus year out of your time in the 50-54 group, depending upon the scheduling of future Cowtowns.

This puts a bit of extra pressure on me, I guess. But -- if I'm up to keeping up with you -- it could mean that we'd both appear in the same age-group results back-to-back.

Sounds like a fine goal for me to try for.

Someday you'll have to send me a copy of the picture from our Joe Pool lake run. That would be great for me to tape above my monitor to inspire me -- a much more personal inspiration to add to what I get from my Steve Prefontaine "The Gift" poster.

I found my 1972-1973 Kirby Track jersey yesterday as well as a picture you took of me while in uniform dashing towards you behind the trailer at Placid Park mobile home park. I expected someday it was going to be something I'd appreciate. It's one of those items that timelines and validates. I also found a 1993 photo of you in your Texas running shorts from the day at Joe Pool lake -- the last time we ever ran together. You are the lighter runner in that photo. I remember best that it was running with a Warbington next to me that was most special... not the pace, not the course, not the distance.

Stay on that edge of craving a run. Make it something you desire from the depths, not a chore designed to bring on anything else. Tue-Thur-Sat are the only days I get out there and that works for me. I am a RUNNER... stay one yourself!!!

Thanks for the recommendation on Long Road to Boston.

I've read -- probably a review on Amazon -- that Once A Runner, The Purple Runner, and Long Road to Boston form the "big three" of running novels, probably of all time. As many people tell me that OAR is their favorite, too, also recommend that I pick up the other two titles as soon as I can.

I'm definitely looking forward to finally reading The Purple Runner. I've got myself predisposed to liking it sight unseen, but I'll definitely comment on it when I'm through reading.
